Medals

People receive medals for many reasons from campaign medals to marathon medals. Sometimes they are awarded to our client directly or maybe they are inherited. Whatever reason, over the years, we have framed many medals for all sorts of different reasons

When framing and displaying medals we always ensure that conservation framing techniques are observed. This means that alkaline neutral materials are used and when fixing Frametec do it in a way that is unobtrusive and can be reversed in the future without causing any damage to the object should it need to be removed.

Often we are given relating memorabilia to add to the display along with the medals. This helps to tell the story. As you can see from the images, there are many different ways of displaying medals. Whenever we are displaying medals with ribbons we generally cut a slot in the backing board and feed the ribbon behind. This is a very neat way of displaying the medals and also alleviates the need to cut the excess ribbon off as it is hidden.

Medals by their nature are three dimensional. In order to deal with this, we often create ‘air gaps’ between the borders and the backing boards displaying the medals. As well as allowing the medals to ‘sit’ properly it has the added effect of casting a shadow around the perimeter of the mounting aperture which can look very effective. Another option, if there is no outer boarder, is to create a ‘box frame’. This has the effect of pushing the display to the back of the frame whilst the protective glass is pushed to the front, therefore, creating an air gap.
